  • Focal length - Wikipedia
For a thin lens in air, the focal length is the distance from the center of the lens to the principal foci (or focal points) of the lens For a converging lens (for example a convex lens ), the focal length is positive and is the distance at which a beam of collimated light will be focused to a single spot
  • camera basics - How can a lens with a single focal length focus on more . . .
To change the focus of the lens, you move the lens relative to the plane on which you're forming the image Specifically, to focus on an object that's closer, you move the lens so it's farther way from the focus plane
  • What is the actual significance of the focal point of a lens?
The focal point of a concave lens is the point where light rays parallel to the axis seem to diverge from after passing through the lens The distance from the lens to this point is called the focal length of the lens
  • MIT creates a camera lens that can change focus without moving parts
Researchers have modified the material used in re-writable CDs to create a new optical lens that shifts its focal point in response to heat, with no moving parts It could enable miniature
  • How to Adjust Focal Length: A Comprehensive Guide for Photographers
Understanding how to adjust focal lengths can significantly enhance a photographer’s ability to manage focus, depth of field, and lens distortion By applying different techniques and adapting to various photography scenarios, one can achieve the desired effects in their images
  • Focal Length of a Lens - HyperPhysics
The principal focal length of a lens is determined by the index of refraction of the glass, the radii of curvature of the surfaces, and the medium in which the lens resides It can be calculated from the lens-maker's formula for thin lenses
  • 24. 3: Lenses - Physics LibreTexts
The beam after passing through the lens appears to be emanating from a particular point on the axis in front of the lens; the distance from this point to the lens is also known as the focal length, although it is negative with respect to the focal length of a converging lens
  • How Focal Length effects Perspective in Photography - Visual Wilderness
Many photographers believe that wide-angle lenses exaggerate distances and make objects appear farther apart, while telephoto lenses compress space and bring the background closer to the foreground But is this really true? The short answer is no—focal length alone does not directly change perspective
  • autofocus - How does changing focus affect focal length? - Photography . . .
Some lenses, including some prime lenses (lenses that don't zoom), move the front elements to focus and the physical length of the lens changes Some of those, such as most macro lenses, will change length significantly
  • “Metalens” Changes its Focal Point Without Using Any Moving Parts
A metal lens (metalens) can shift focus without needing any moving parts, including optics, as heat makes it go from amorphous (A) to crystalline (C)
